Children’s Talk: Seeing things differently

Children’s Talk: Seeing things differently

Some scientists placed some everyday objects under a microscope. Show the children the photos and encourage them to guess what they think the objects might be. Human tongue Chocolate Cake A single droplet of sea water A butterfly wing Banana We can all look at the same thing and see something differently. The same is true of people and groups that we might see or engage with. Say: I wonder what you see when you look at each of these photographs. Sometimes we can just see the stereotypes…but following Jesus and being a Christian involves seeing ourselves, the world around us and the people in it differently. All are important and valued by God.  The children’s talk would tie in well with the the hymn ‘Will You Come and Follow Me’ Will you come and follow me if I but call your name? Will you go where you don’t know and never be the same? Will you let my love be shown, will you let my name be known, will you let my life be grown in you and you in me? Will you leave your self behind if I but call your name? Will you care for cruel and kind and never be the same? Will you risk the hostile stare should your life attract or scare, will you let me answer prayer in you and you in me? Will you let the blinded see if I but call your name? Will you set the prisoners free and never be the same? Will you kiss the leper clean and do such as this unseen, and admit to what I mean in...
Story: Potato, Eggs and Coffee Beans

Story: Potato, Eggs and Coffee Beans

Once upon a time a daughter complained to her father that her life was miserable and that she didn’t know how she was going to make it. She was tired of fighting and struggling all the time. It seemed just as one problem was solved, another one soon followed. Her father, a chef, took her to the kitchen. He filled three pots with water and placed each on a high fire. Once the three pots began to boil, he placed potatoes in one pot, eggs in the second pot, and ground coffee beans in the third pot. He then let them sit and boil, without saying a word to his daughter. The daughter, moaned and impatiently waited, wondering what he was doing. After twenty minutes he turned off the burners. He took the potatoes out of the pot and placed them in a bowl. He pulled the eggs out and placed them in a bowl. He then ladled the coffee out and placed it in a cup. Turning to her he asked. “Daughter, what do you see?” “Potatoes, eggs, and coffee,” she hastily replied. “Look closer,” he said, “and touch the potatoes.” She did and noted that they were soft. He then asked her to take an egg and break it. After pulling off the shell, she observed the hard-boiled egg. Finally, he asked her to sip the coffee. Its rich aroma brought a smile to her face. “Father, what does this mean?” she asked. He then explained that the potatoes, the eggs and coffee beans had each faced the same adversity– the boiling water. However, each one reacted...
Reflection: It’s not a box

Reflection: It’s not a box

A few weeks ago I was at my godson’s birthday party. He just turned 4! I watched him as he opened his all the presents.  He’d pick a gift – eagerly tear off all the paper and excitedly play with his new toy. When he got bored he’d move on to the next present…play for a while…then move on to the next gift. Fast forward a few hours and all his newly opened toys were lying across the floor and wee David was happily playing inside a box that one of his presents came in. Hours passed…and he was still playing in the box. Why are you sitting in a box I asked him….It’s not a box he said it’s a racing car! What you doing on top of the box I asked…it’s not a box he said it’s a really big mountain! Now why are you wearing the box I asked…it’s not a box he said it’s a super robot he replied. Why are you still playing with that old box I asked…it’s not a box he explained it’s a pirate ship A little imagination goes a long way… I don’t know what you see when you look at this box…maybe you see a spaceship, a racing car or a super robot. Maybe you just see an old tatty box. And when you look at yourself in the mirror – I wonder who or what you see staring back. Good looking? Charming?Do you see all the things you’re not good at or struggle with, the labels people have given you, the labels you’ve given yourself or all the...

Water tricks

Looking for an object lesson or children’s talk that will capture your children’s imagination? These cool water tricks could be an ideal way of introducing Jesus’ miracles or helping young people consider the theme of making  the impossible possible. They could also be used as stand alone activities for children’s groups like Messy Church. http://www.childrenandyouth.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2014/06/Instant-Ice-Waterbending-In-Real-Life.mp4...
