Prayer Collage

In the week before this activity collect a variety of local newspapers.

Organize your class into twos and threes and give each group a different local newspaper. Have the groups look through the newspapers for stories of people they would like to pray for. It’s not hard to find people who have been victims of different crimes, are facing challenges, or would benefit from prayer in some way. Have them create a collage of newspaper stories, with short prayers for the people they want to pray for written on the collage.

Feelings Prayer Game

Game Board: feelings prayer game

Dots and Squares Prayer Game

You will need: A piece of paper, pens or pencils (each player should have a different colour)

Draw some dots in lines and columns on the paper The example below has 10 rows of 7 dots.

Dots and squares

Each player takes it in turns to draw a line between two of the dots.  Eventually, you will be able to close up boxes.  Whoever draws the line that closes the box can write or draw inside the box…
  • Someone’s name- ask God to bless them and help them
  • Something that you want to thank God for
  • Something you would like to ask God for
Take time to say the prayer out loud or in your head, then carry on!
The winner is the player who has filled the most boxes by the end of the game.

Popcorn Challenge

To start off have the kids stand in two straight lines, facing each other. The kids will be paired up in teams of two. Once they’re in position hand one piece of popcorn to each team. Standing ten feet or so apart have the kids toss their piece of popcorn to their partner.

Now obviously they wont be able to catch it. So, when this happens tell them that they may take one small step toward their partner. Have them keep doing this until their partner catches the popcorn. Also, tell them that anyone who eats their popcorn piece loses.

“Our relationship with God is similar to the game we played. It’s really hard to hear God when you’re far away from him. How do we get closer to God?”

  • Read Our Bible
  • Pray
  • Go To Church
  • Praise and Worship God
  • Spend some time with God every day
  • Spend some time in silence
  • Slow down

Prayer Tissue Paper Craft

Prayer

PRAY Template

Download the template above and print onto black card. Carefully cut out all the areas that you want to color with your scissors or a craft knife and cutting mat. These are the areas that light will shine through when you make your stained glass out of tissue paper.

Turn the black paper over. Choose a color of tissue paper for each area you cut out. Cut the tissue paper just slightly larger than the hole.
Tape or glue your tissue paper shape over the appropriate hole in the black paper.  Try to pull the tissue fairly tight as you work on this step.

Repeat until you’ve covered all the holes in your black paper design with tissue paper. Turn the paper over and hang your craft where light can shine through.

Prayer Wheel

Use the single-linked method to make a band with alternating colours (as shown above). Add the link to make a bracelet and wear it as a reminder that God is with you wherever we go – in front and behind as in the bracelet.

Praying for our friends and family

Choose three colours of band – one colour to represent you, one to represent your family and friends, and one for those who need God’s help.

Review

The review can happen at the time or later – it can be done individually or with others.

Some useful questions to help volunteers consider and learn from the session include:

  • Has each child been able to participate in their own way?
  • What went well and why?
  • Has each child been able to reflect, even a little, on something about what prayer is for and given practical tools to help them engage in prayer in relevant ways?
  • What is there for you to learn from this session?
  • What might you do differently another time?
